Recent acquisitions

As all museums labelled Musée de France, the Limoges Fine Arts Museum is committed to the largest possible expansion of its collections and is required to respect the entry procedures defined by the Ministry of Culture.

There are various options to expand the collections: purchases, donations, endowments, legacies or administrative procedures. In theory, museum's acquisitions are irreversible. Therefore, all are important and must be justified as the object becomes a part of the whole museum's history. Acquisitions are decided by the curator within an acquisition policy, with criteria based on two main points:

  • Historical, geographical and typological coherence with the existing collections or an addition to fill in a gap
  • The quality of the object: its historical value, conservation, technical and aesthetic quality, rarity etc.
